Heat Your Home Effectively This Fall With These Quick and Easy Tips

Heat Your Home Effectively This Fall With These Quick and Easy Tips

As the temperatures start to drop in Sparta Township, NJ, many homeowners in the area anticipate seeing a rise in their heating bills. However, there are several ways you can keep your home comfortable while still preserving energy and money each month. Check out our list of tips to help you conserve in comfort this fall.

Don’t Ignore Your Air Filter

Checking your unit’s air filter and changing it every month is one of the easiest tasks you can do to keep it working effectively. When your filter becomes dirty, it places more pressure on the system to perform. This eventually causes energy bills to spike and can even shorten the lifespan of your system. Dusty air filters can also reduce the quality of air in your home, which can trigger symptoms of allergies and asthma. With this in mind, be sure to change your air filter every 30 to 90 days to ensure the health of both your family and HVAC unit.

Check Your Thermostat

If you haven’t invested in a programmable thermostat just yet, consider doing so this season. A programmable thermostat will allow you to set the temperature colder during the night and throughout the day when you and your family are out of the house. This can cut down your energy consumption and drastically reduce your energy expenses each month. In addition, you should think about having your thermostat examined by an HVAC technician, who will be able to calibrate it correctly and ensure that it works properly. If your thermostat isn’t running as it should, you may inadvertently be paying more to heat your home less effectively.

When you install a thermostat, make sure it is positioned in an area that is isolated from any source of cold or heat. For example, a wall that is not facing sunlight or near a window would be an optimal location for a thermostat.

Seal Doors and Windows

If your windows and doors aren’t properly sealed, cold air can easily get inside and drive up your energy usage. Be sure to check the edges of your doors and windows for any gaps. If you notice any drafts, have them repaired now before the weather becomes colder.
