How to Clean Your Air Conditioning Vents

How to Clean Your Air Conditioning Vents

Use These 4 Steps When Cleaning Your Vents

Your air conditioning may keep you comfortable in the hot weather, but it can also be a danger to your health. Dirty air conditioning vents can fill the air with particles that can exacerbate health problems and even cause new issues to develop. It is wise to clean your air conditioning vents periodically. Not only will this help keep your house clean, it will safeguard your health as well.

Cleaning Your Vents

The process is simple, but it is important to be thorough. You’ll need a vacuum cleaner, a screwdriver, a broom and a cleaning brush.

  1. Turn off the power to your air-conditioning system and don’t turn it back on until you are finished cleaning.
  2. Unscrew the vents from the floors and walls. Use your cleaning brush to scrub them clean. If they are particularly dirty, you’ll need to soak them in soap and water to complete the job.
  3. Use your vacuum cleaner to clean the dust out of the vents. You will need a long hose to get as deep into the vents as possible. There may be mold or mildew growing in these ducts, so be sure to vacuum thoroughly.
  4. Use your broom to clean the vents in the ceiling. It may be necessary to wear a mask, especially if it has been a while since you have cleaned them. A step ladder will allow you to clean more thoroughly and even use your vacuum cleaner on the ceiling vents.

The process does not typically take a long time, although if it has been a while since you have cleaned it may take a bit longer. Cleaning the vents is best done at least twice per year. If you live in a climate that has warm and cold weather, you might consider cleaning before using the air conditioning and the heating system for the first time each year. The improvement to your home’s cleanliness and your family’s health will be well worth the investment of time.
